FROM THE PASS OF THE FORK TO THE VILLACELLA VILLAGE
The route highlights the historical, architectural and cultural aspects of the Lower Aveto Valley. In fact, Villa Cella was a cluster of houses that connected the Sturla Valley (and, through it, the Tigullio area) with the Aveto Valley. The Benedictine monks who settled there since 1103 engaged in assistance to pilgrims and travelers, as well as land reclamation: for example, the emptying of the lake-marsh of the Piana di Cabanne is attributed to them.
The famous “Mulino di Villa Cella” is part of a series of mills typical of the Val d'Aveto, in which wheat, rye and chestnuts and, in the 1700s, also corn were ground. They represented a significant source of income as the “Gabella della Macina” (established by the Genoese since 1610) allowed millers to rise in rank in the society of the valley.
